Challenging installation of a PE100 outfall pipeline in the UK’s Severn Estuary

Kaymac Marine & Civil Engineering has
successfully completed a challenging £8.4M project to install a new PE100
outfall pipeline in an ecologically sensitive area of the Severn Estuary in the
UK.
The project involved the installation of a
new 1.4km long by 560mm internal diameter PE100 outfall pipeline that was
manufactured in Norway by Pipelife Norge and transported 2100 kilometers to
Newport, Wales in 11 sections. After site preparation, which primarily
comprised excavation of the pipe trench, the pipeline was then installed using
over 260 pre-cast concrete ballast collars. These were designed to ensure
stability of the pipeline against the hydrodynamic forces of the estuary and
the natural buoyancy of the PE100 material.
