This paper investigates possible use of recycled material as a part of a multilayer polyethylene pressure pipe system. Crack propagation in different configurations is simulated. Lifetimes of pipes containing recycled material are calculated. Results are compared with lifetimes of pipes made of virgin materials.

Significant effort is now put to force pipe producers to use more and more recycled materials in their products. This paper investigates the possibility to use recycled material not only in the non-pressure pipe systems, but also in pressure pipes. Several configurations are studied in terms of crack propagation simulation and lifetime estimation. The results show, that while it is not possible to make a pressure pipe entirely of recycled material, it can be beneficial in multilayer pipe systems. The estimated lifetimes of multilayer pipes containing a layer of recycled material are not significantly different from the homogenous pipes made of PE100 or PE100RC.
