DIFFERENT THERMO-OXIDATIVE TESTS IN COMPARISON FOR ONE INDUSTRIAL PE PIPE COMPOUND

Plastic Pipes Conference Association # 2023 Lake Buena Vista

Norbert Jansen

A practical requirement of temperature resistance of minimum 50 years at 70°C was established for the extra high voltage (EHV) corridor projects in Germany. Experts have debated what tests are best suited to prove the suitability of a pipe resin for cable protection pipes which may be installed hastily and under harsh conditions in the field (example: without sand bedding) together with new installation methods (example: No-Dig, trenchless, HDD). Under high electrical transport capacity and load, the cables heat up, a practical requirement for the cable conduits which leads to heating of the surrounding ground. During the initial cable pull-installation phase, pressurized air is used to transport the pull ropes or wires through the conduit pipe. After that, while in service, the conduit pipe will not be under pressure, but will be subjected to mechanical stress, and will have to maintain its shape and function to allow the cable pull-in for a second time after about 50 years when the first cable is replaced. In this paper, various test methods are discussed, where thermal ageing is applied to one natural PE100-RC resin in the form of pellets, plaques and pipe to perform a lifetime prediction.
