Plastics are widely used in various industries, resulting in the generation of significant amounts of plastic waste, which causes environmental and economic problems. Although mechanical recycling is the most commonly employed technology, the resulting recyclates often suffer from degradation and contamination. This makes the use of recycled plastics challenging, especially in high-demand applications such as the plastic pressure pipe industry. However, the introduction of current and future legislation as well as revisions of European standards that are promoting the incorporation of recycled plastics in new products, makes it necessary to have an open vision of the future and therefore evaluate the feasibility of incorporating recycled materials in the manufacture of polyethylene pipes., including those applications for pressure. In this study, different streams of recycled HDPE, ranging from commercially available recyclates to innovative sources such as IBC containers, fuel tanks, and fishing nets, were analyzed. These recycled resins were blended with raw HDPE resins (PE100 pipe grade) at various ratios to improve their final properties. The blends´ characterization was focused on two critical properties for polyethylene pressure pipes: Slow Crack Growth (SCG) and Rapid Crack Propagation (RCP) resistances. The effects of incorporating HDPE recyclates on these properties was thoroughly analyzed and discussed in this study.
