Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipes continue to gain popularity in plumbing and indoor climate applications around the globe. This study focuses on increasing the sustainability of PEX pipes by utilizing recycled PEX and production waste streams into PEX production. Different methods available for recycling and the challenges involved in the incorporation of the recycled material are discussed.
Production of cross-linked PEX pipes containing recycled materials was accomplished by two available methods for crosslinking. Testing performed on these new pipes indicates that the pipes produced meet the short-term testing requirements outlined in ASTM standards, for example hydrostatic sustained pressure requirements and ESCR tests described in ASTM F876. Performance comparison of pipes containing recycled materials relative to pipes made with virgin materials are included in this evaluation.
