Drinking water companies with ageing networks are facing vast amounts of drinking water network reconstructions during the coming decades. This development coincides with the energy transition, which puts pressure on the available space underground. These external drivers give drinking water companies an opportunity for rethinking their networks and design principles. High velocity self-cleaning networks are substantially cheaper, more reliable and deliver drinking water of better quality to end-users compared to conventional networks. High velocity self-cleaning networks actually need to be designed considering instantaneous downstream demand. It needs practical tools embedding design rules, which supports network design in daily practice. Recently such a comprehensive design tool for drinking water networks was developed by The PeopleGroup based on over twenty years’ experience of KWR in designing these advanced networks with a basic spreadsheet [1]. This tool was incorporated in an integral design tool encapsulating the whole design process. The tool accelerates the design process of tailor made high velocity self-cleaning networks with a factor 5-8 including work preparatory work. The tool allows for embedding possible future restraints in network design, such as unwanted heating of drinking water due to underground anthropogenic heat sources [2].
