Plastic Pipes Conference Association # 2018 Las-Vegas

Joaquín Lahoz Castillo

Irrigation networks in Spain extensively make use of plastic pressure pipes systems. Some recent failures focus the attention on Rapid Crack Propagation phenomena. Larger high-pressure PVC-u pipes are involved in most incidences detected. The level of gelation of those pipes were measured per EN-ISO 1452-2 test methods DCM, DSC and Tensile. Influence of poor gelation on longitudinal cracks was clearly evidenced in previous papers (1)(3) . Now relationships between poor gelation and pressure test failures has been evaluated in this study.

In the last years several incidences related to longitudinal cracks were found in large dimension PVC-u pressure pipes manufactured according to EN-ISO 1452 series standard. Some of those pipes were investigated in CEIS to check their compliance with the degree of gelation requirements and alternative tests (Tensile test, and ‘Onset’ temperature by DSC) included in the standard. Three new case studies including resistance to pressure test were presented for discussion.
