The study on long-term resistance to liquid media immersion of adhesive-coated steel tapes applied in metal reinforced polyethylene spiral corrugated pipe for underground sewer

The properties of adhesive-coated steel tapes in metal reinforced polyethylene spiral corrugated pipe (MRPSCP) are very important for the properties of MRPSCP. In the present research, we take 3 years to develop a new technology to fabricate BZ-SH99 adhesive-coated steel tapes, which have better properties than those fabricated by using traditional methods. For soak performance, the adhesive layer coating on the adhesive-coated steel tapes hasn’t fallen off when BZ-SH99 are immersed in water for about 2 years, and the immersion is still on. The max disjointed length is only 10mm when they are immersed in 20wt% sodium hydroxide solution for 168 hours. The soak resistance in dilute sulphuric acid and organic solvent (such as benzene) is also good. In addition, the MRPSCP products fabricated used BZ-SH99 adhesive-coated steel tapes exhibits outstanding long-term stability.

Metal reinforced polyethylene spiral corrugated pipe has been widely implied for underground sewer in China. The structure is shown in Fig. 1[1]. Polyethylene (PE) is Non-polar polymer, and it cannot have good compatibility with metal. So, for realizing value of steel tape of strengthening pipe, adhesives are need. Adhesives coating on the steel tape act as connectors to prevent separation between steel tape and non-polar polymer. Underground sewers need to bear water erosion for long time. So, immersion resistance of pipe is very important, which acts one of the characterization for long-term stability. In the case of project, the corrosion of steel tapes following with the separation between PE and steel tapes is one type of the invalidation. So, it’s important to study soak performance of adhesive-coated steel tapes for long-term reliability of MRPSCP products.
