A Flexible Solution for Renovation of Small Diameter Service Pipes

Renovation & Rehabilitation

Plastic Pipes Conference Association # 1998 Gothenburg

Morgan, Muckle, Scott

A three way partnership has resulted in the development of a new solution to the refurbishment of old iron and steel gas service pipes. The solution which has been developed allows a flexible polyethylene replacement pipe to be inserted into the old pipe system. This avoids the need for the costly excavations or installation practices which have traditionally been required to overcome the problems of inserting pipes through swept bend and elbow fittings. An explanation of the renovation technique will be given together with an account of the experiences and benefits which have been identified through the use of the system by Transco.

It has long been the case that plastic pipes have been subject of folding operations in a factory and then supplied to site for use in pipeline renovation applications. The same cannot be said for pipes subject to diameter reduction as they have, as a principle, relied on being diameter reduced at site in a forming...

For the movement of fuel gas and water, plastics pipes are dominant in many markets, and this success has been based on single material solid wall pipes. There are now an expanding number of multi-layered plastics pipes, and described here for the first time is the performance of the second-generation of skinned pipe...
