Given the same operational pressure, the required thickness of molecularly oriented PVC pipes is 35-40% less than for PVC-U pipes. This is one of the various advantages of the material, which is interesting an increasing number of producers. The technical and commercial success of PVC-O pressure pipes relies heavily on the method of socket formation. In fact, the demand for automatic belling machines suitable for installation in PVC-O pipe extrusion lines emerged during the second half of the 1990s. SICA PVC-O belling machines represent a manufacturing solution which is both industrially efficient and simple to operate. They are the result of a fine-tuned processing system and precisely formulated design specifications. This document describes the socket formation process developed by SICA for PVC-O pressure piping intended for transport of pressurised fluids, as well as implementation of the process in fully automated machines intended for installation in PVC-O piping extrusion lines. Particular emphasis is given to aspects which determine the reliability and repeatability of the process.

In underground plastic drainage pipes the integrated socket joint technology is now used widely in PVC pipes with a compact or multilayer wall. On the other hand, in PP and HDPE pipes this form of connection, despite its well-known advantages, is still not widely used. The reason for this is basically due to the...

Piping systems for indoor sewage usually use PP and PVC-U socketed pipes with diameters no greater than 160 mm [6.30"]. The pipes are short in length in comparison to pipes used in outdoor sewage or in pressurised water distribution networks. Pipes less than three metres in length are produced, and there is...

Structured wall plastic pipes (double wall with corrugated external wall) are widely used for underground sewage drains. Socket joints, integrated onto the pipes themselves, are the most commonly used junction system. With PVC-U pipes, the socket is normally thermoformed in the corrugated wall by a specific belling...

In polyethylene piping systems for conveying pressurised water the use of socket systems for pipe joining is relatively uncommon. This is because the significant thickness of the pipe walls makes the system for thermoforming of the socket at the pipe end complex and economically unattractive. Only recently...
