An extrusion process for manufacturing a molecularly oriented PVC pipe is described. The pipe is stretched in both the hoop and axial d i i i o n s and is therefore described as a BiAxial PVC pipe. It is shown how this process enhances strength and toughness which allows a higher standard of pipe at lower cost. The pipe design process shows how with these high strength materials that ring stiffiess becomes the key criterion.

The relatively high safety factors used in the design of PVC-U pressure pipes reflect concern about the possibility of brittle failure in service. Toughness may be improved by the addition of iinpact modifiers and plasticisers but normally strength is impaired. In this paper we show that pipes exhibiting a high...
