PE100 Pipeline Systems In The Coal Seam Gas Industry [PE]

Plastic Pipes Conference Association # 2012 Barcelona

Heathcote Mark

Key Words : PE100, Coal Seam Gas, Water The coal seam gas projects in Australia are undergoing a massive expansion, with greatly increased gas production for both domestic and export markets. Total investment is expected to be in excess of AUD $30b. PE100 has been selected as the material of choice for the gas gathering pipelines and pipelines for produced formation water. The demand for PE pipe is significant with over 30,000 wells to be drilled and in excess of 50,000km of PE pipeline required. In order to minimise the risks and costs associated with developing such extensive piping systems the major energy companies, engineering consultants and plastics pipes industry combined resources to prepare a code of practice specifically for the application. The code addresses materials, design, safety, testing, commissioning and other aspects relating specifically to PE pipelines. The contribution of the combined PE compound, fitting and pipe industry was critical in providing appropriate expertise. The process of establishing the joint working group and gaining mutual recognition of the expertise and contributions of the various participants is described.

Components made of plastic are facing ever-increasing demands with respect to their production, use and durability. This also holds for gas and drinking water pressure pipes made of high-density polyethylene (PE-HD), where service lifetimes of up to 50 years and in some cases even 100 years are required. One of the...

Author(s) : Vivek Rohatg, Gregor Hiesgen, Mark J. Lamborn, Ashish M. Sukhadia, Douglas E. Simpson, David W. Borrego, Pamela L. Maeger

Maintaining dimensions within specifications is problematic for the extrusion of large diameter thick-wall polyethylene (PE) pipe (> 75 mm wall) due to sag caused by insufficient resin melt strength. However, sag can be controlled through careful resin selection and optimization of the pipe cooling process. This...

2018 Las-Vegas : Innovative design of the atlanta braves baseball field

Author(s) : Jim Goddard, Issam Khoury, Mark Heinlein

The Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball team built a new stadium north of Atlanta, Georgia. The field drainage design required the removal of 75mm (3 inches) of rainfall an hour and a system for warming or cooling the field using air blown through the drainage system and field profile using heat from pipe buried...

2018 Las-Vegas : New high modulus polypropylene helps the development of large diameter utility tunnel

Author(s) : Dongyu Fang, Mark Yu, Zhang Qingfu

In the present paper we introduced how high modulus polypropylene helps an innovative design of utility tunnel up to 4000mm in diameter. High modulus polypropylene shows high modulus but still maintain reasonable flexibility so that tunnel and surrounding soil could form an integrated system, which means no force is...

2018 Las-Vegas : PE100-RC in large diameter sea outfall applications

Author(s) : Mark Yu, Dongyu Fang, Peck Tze Kang, Amos Tay , Fan Liu

Large diameter pipe was introduced in refineries and petrochemical plant, desalination plant and power plant for water intake and sea out fall in the past decade. PE100-RC material was selectedfor its excellent balance of superior bi-modal stress crack resistance and consistent high stiffness modulus. Under the...

2018 Las-Vegas : The use of temperature, lubrication, and supplied hydraulic pressure in the production of oriented PVC pipe

Author(s) : Jie Feng, Michael Petr, Jeff Wenzel, Mark Mirgon, Sam Crabtree, Alan Nakatani

Through tensile tests, simulated orientation, tribology, and finite element analysis, this study explored the effect of temperature, lubrication and applied hydraulic pressure in the PVC orientation process. It was demonstrated that tight control of these parameters is critical in a continuous PVC orientation process...

2016 Berlin : Novel polyolefin solutions - Increasing production rate of pipes and fittings with superior properties

Author(s) : Antti Tynys, Dongyu Fang, Prashant Nikhade, Mark Yu, Tomi Kangas

The need for larger diameter pipes and fittings for in-house heating, plumbing and domestic water systems is pushing the existing materials and processes to their limits. More often final products cannot be produced without penalties either in production rate or in final product quality. This paper discusses...

2014 Chicago : Rapid Crack Propagation – Observations of Critical Pressure and Critical Temperature Relationships of Polyethylene Pipes

Author(s) : Ashish M. Sukhadia, Mark J. Lamborn, Pam L. Maeger

Over the past several years, we have conducted extensive investigations of the Rapid Crack Propagation (RCP) behavior of Polyethylene (PE) pipes. While the typical data of interest is the Critical Pressure (Pc) and/or Critical Temperature (Tc), we chose to take our investigations further by exploring and generating...

Author(s) : Mark J. Lamborn, Pam L. Maeger, Rick E. Kunc, Vivek Rohatgi, Paul J. DesLauriers, Ashish M. Sukhadia

Dual cooling is a post-extrusion cool down process employed for polyethylene (PE) pipe, whereby either water or ambient air is forced through the pipe bore following extrusion, in order to accelerate cooling. The primary benefits offered by the dual cooling process are increased production rates and reduced resin...
