The production of the plastic resin is one of the principal contributors to the lifecycle environmental impacts of a plastic pipe. For the climate impact, up to two-thirds of the footprint of a plastic pipe can be accounted by the plastic resin. Accurate cradle-to-grave lifecycle analyses for plastic pipes heavily rely on up-to-date cradle-to-gate data, from resource extraction (cradle) to the gate factory of the resin manufacturer.
This paper summarizes the main results of a cradle-to-gate analysis of the environmental impacts of the suspension PVC grades manufactured by the leading European manufacturers, using most up to date background data for chlorine and ethylene, and primary foreground data from the European manufacturing sites. Dominance analyses show that the environmental impacts of suspension PVC are themselves dominated by the precursor products chlorine and ethylene. Thanks to the high chlorine content (57%) and the much reduced environmental impacts for the production of chlorine in Europe, many of the increased environmental impacts linked to the use of fossil fuels and feedstock observed vs. the previous edition of this analysis, can be compensated.

The Notched Constant Ligament Stress test (NCLS test, ASTM F2136)[1] is a test method that measures the slow crack growth in High Density Polyethylene. The NCLS test requires a notch on all test specimens to act as a stress concentration at that point so crack propagation can be easily predicted and studied. In...
