Large Diameter Spirally Wound PP Sewerage Pipe Installation in Sicily

New Successes & New Solutions

Plastic Pipes Conference Association # 2004 Milan

Barresi, Ek

The underground installation in Canicattì Municipality in Sicily is a combined sewerage and rainwater system of a very specific design. The complete system is manufactured by Simplast using a new generation PP material and the Weholite spiral wound pipe solution licensed from KWH Pipe. The design meets the range of requirements set forth by Canicattì Municipality which focussed on safe and easy installation, durability, including the ability to accommodate soil movement, in order to secure the function of the system over a minimum of 80 years. The large diameter Weholite system, based on PP material, will better meet these requirements particularly in the difficult soil and ground conditions in the area compared to concrete or clay or other rigid pipe systems. The complete system is produced according to the requirements in prEN13476 and design and installation are following European or International standards and guidelines. After final evaluation and optimisation of the system parts, pipe design, jointing techniques etc, the production and installation started in 2003. Based on the success of these initial trials the main installation work, covering a total length of 3.3 km in pipe dimensions of 500 to 2000mm will be completed in 2004.

In order to improve the circular economy of polymers in terms of sustainability and reduced carbon footprint, the increased use of recyclates has become a topic of major importance. Due to their long design lifetimes, pipe applications represent an excellent opportunity to create added value to non-virgin polymers....
