Case Studies, Discussion & Buyer's Guide

Plastic Pipes Conference Association # 1972 Southampton

West, Warr

During the years 1966 and 1967, early ones in the preparation of the Verwood Sewerage Scheme, it would be fair to say that visits to the offices of the Wimborne & Cranborne Rural District Council from representatives of the PVC pipe industry were few The representatives that called quite regularly to enquire of schemes incorporating pressure pipes found themselves in turn being pressured for information on the application of PVC pipes for sewerage purposes. There is little doubt that whereas in those days the opportunity to discuss PVC was appreciated, some embarrassment was experienced by the lack of information they were able to offer as regards both availability and technical details in support of the use of PVC pipes for underground drainage.

It could be said that in those days the Wimborne & Cranborne RDC were looking to PVC as a 'future' material for small to medium diameter sewers, before the product was marketed or tried. Subsequent events have clearly justified this belief ...

Until the late 1950’s, water and sewerage pipe lines used predominantly rigid joints. These were often made from tarred rope and cement mortar. The introduction of ‘flexible’ elastomeric joints allowed angular deflection, transverse shear load and localized pipe deformation without leakage or failure of the joint....
